Research Interest

Dr. Levinthal graduated from the University of Pittsburgh's MD/PhD program and has been affiliated with the PCPR since its inception.  He is a neurogastroenterologist focused on helping patients with functional bowel disorders and visceral pain syndromes, including patients with GI symptoms associated with neurological illnesses such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease.  His research is focused on understanding the neurobiological basis of cerebral cortical influences on autonomic nervous system function, particularly in regard to CNS influences on the GI tract.  He is also interested in the cerebral cortical processing of visceral pain.
